A decade ago, Geoffrey Hinton predicted that radiologists would soon be obsolete due to advancements in artificial intelligence. Yet, despite the initial warnings from tech experts, the number of active radiologists in the US has grown by about 10% over the last decade.
According to Christoph Herpfer, an economist and professor at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, this growth is not a fluke but rather a direct result of a shortage in the field. “We actually have a huge shortage of radiologists,” he said. The exact opposite of Hinton’s prediction has occurred.
The demand for radiologists remains high, with 7,469 active positions as of May and average salaries reaching $571,000, up 9% year over year. However, the profession is not just about reading images; radiologists also consult with other physicians, monitor patients, and perform hands-on procedures. Introducing AI automation into scan-reading and report writing frees up time for doctors to dedicate to their other tasks.
“The number of studies that a radiologist has to do every year keeps going up, the reimbursement keeps going down, and they just get really, really burnt out,” Dr. Jeff Chang said, describing his own experience as an ER radiologist before founding AI healthcare startup Rad AI. His company’s tools aim to save radiologists time by automatically generating report conclusions.
Tech leaders have recently acknowledged that replacing human doctors entirely is unlikely in the near future. Reed Hastings, Netflix cofounder, noted that while AI has potential, it hasn’t replaced radiologists in the last five years. “We’re drawn to these scenarios of AI wiping out things,” he said. “But not in radiology.”
The hype surrounding AI’s potential to replace radiologists has overlooked a crucial aspect: humanity’s role in healthcare. As Dr. Tonie Reincke pointed out, AI cannot simulate compassion, empathy, or nonverbal cues that humans give while speaking to patients. “A computer can’t hold a patient’s hand when they’re crying,” she said. “A computer can’t hand them a tissue.”
This oversight has significant implications for medical students considering a career in radiology. The profession is not just about reading images but also about interacting with patients, which AI systems cannot replicate.
The radiologist ruse serves as a cautionary tale for those who tout AI’s potential to replace human professionals entirely. While AI can certainly augment the work of doctors, it will never fully replace humanity’s touch in healthcare.
