A new study published in Nature Climate Change reveals that boreal forests play a crucial role in regulating permafrost temperatures. These vast expanses of coniferous tree cover, spanning Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia, and Russia, have long been recognized as carbon sinks but are now found to have a cooling effect on the ground beneath them.

Boreal trees prevent massive amounts of ancient organic matter from decaying by shading the surface, thereby preventing greenhouse gases from being released into the air. In fact, tree cover reduces summer melting depth by half or more, keeping about one meter of soil frozen solid through the hottest months.

This natural service extends beyond carbon sequestration; it also protects soil packed with underground ice from rapid thawing and collapse. When icy ground thaws too quickly, it creates sinkholes, landslides, and muddy lakes, releasing an additional 19 petagrams of carbon into the atmosphere.

The implications are significant: boreal forests act as a thermal brake on permafrost regions, preventing the warming loop that drives rapid thaw. Without these trees, we risk unleashing massive amounts of methane and carbon dioxide into the air, accelerating global warming. The study estimates that tree cover shields 59 billion tons – roughly one-third of all the carbon locked in forested permafrost soils.

Researchers warn that hotter temperatures, more frequent wildfires, and deforestation pose a double threat to these forests. Burning trees releases carbon directly into the atmosphere and strips away shade, causing deep-frozen ground below to melt. This highlights the paradox that our efforts to mitigate climate change are being undermined by factors we’re trying to control.

The taiga’s influence on Northern Hemisphere weather patterns cannot be overstated. Preserving these forests not only protects a crucial carbon sink but also safeguards global weather stability. Losing this natural service would have catastrophic consequences, including more frequent and intense wildfires, droughts, and extreme weather events.
