On Tuesday, as the helicopter took off from the Ellipse near the White House, commercial air traffic at nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) was not paused as required by safety protocols.
According to federal officials, this lapse resulted in what the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) termed a "momentary loss of separation" between Marine One and an American Airlines regional carrier flight.
