The Shadowy Web of Hussam Luka: Accountability Fades in Syria The discovery of a phonebook in an abandoned luxury apartment in Damascus has shed new light on the disappearance of Hussam Luka, one of Bashar al Assad's top security officials.

Known as "The Spider" for his vast network of informants and allies, Luka was accused of orchestrating atrocities and systematic torture during Syria's civil war.

Luka's alleged involvement in the so called Eid Massacre, which killed 28 people including 17 children, has been cited as a prime example of his brutality.
